Celebrate this joyful season in the heart of the Austrian Alps on this wonderfully inclusive Christmas escape. Based in the charming alpine village of Werfenweng, you’ll enjoy relaxed days filled with seasonal treats, from leisurely breakfasts with Prosecco to cosy afternoons of coffee and cake, followed by festive dinners and a special Christmas Day celebration.

A visit to the lakeside town of Zell am See is also included, where there is the opportunity to take an optional cable car ride up Schmittenhöhe Mountain. Next, wander the twinkling markets of Salzburg, spend a magical Christmas Eve exploring Salzburg’s UNESCO-listed old town, and soak up the winter charm of the Gasteiner Valley with a Christmas Day visit to elegant Bad Gastein. If you wish to extend the festivities, an optional Boxing Day excursion to Bad Ischl and a traditional horse-drawn carriage ride provide a memorable finale to your getaway.

Set off on your festive getaway to the charming Austrian capital, Salzburg, Mozart’s place of birth and the setting for The Sound of Music.

You’ll be welcomed by your tour manager at Salzburg or Munich airport and transferred to the hotel, located in a pretty historic district.

Enjoy a welcome drink upon arrival and settle into your room before dinner.

After breakfast, board the coach and travel south to the nearby town of Zell am See, located on the shores of Lake Zell. With its distinctive church tower and backdrop of snow-capped ski slopes, this picturesque alpine destination promises a delightful experience.

To get a better view of the scenery from above, board a cable car and travel up to the top of the Schmittenhöhebahn mountain. From here, take in the expansive valley and Lake Zell below. Walk around the various panoramic platforms to snap some photographs and grab a hot drink and snack in one of the cosy mountain huts or restaurants before heading back down.

Return to the hotel in the evening for dinner.

Celebrate this special Christmas Eve with a highlight of the tour, an incredibly festive visit to Salzburg. A walking tour will take you into the heart of the Altstadt (old town), packed with baroque buildings and built across steep hills. In 1996, this area was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Centre, and it has remained beautifully preserved.

Your guide will point out landmarks like the Hohensalzburg Fortress, one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval fortresses, which looks out over the city, and the striking Salzburg Cathedral, a Baroque masterpiece. You can also see the building where Mozart was born, which is now a museum, showcasing his life.

Following this tour, you’ll visit one of Salzburg’s most popular markets with the fortress and cathedral serving as a stunning backdrop. Dating back to the 15th century, this is one of the oldest Christmas markets in the world. Sample some traditional delicacies, sip on a hot punch, and browse the labyrinth of decorated wooden stands during some free time. There will also be an assortment of events, including choral concerts, live music, and colourful parades to keep you entertained.

Later today, the coach will take you back to the hotel for a special Austrian dinner with your fellow travellers.

It’s Christmas Day, and you can kick it off with breakfast and a few glasses of bubbles. This morning will be at leisure, allowing you to take a peaceful winter walk, perhaps to the nearby village of Werfenweng, or relax at the hotel, taking advantage of the wellness area.

Later in the day, you’ll travel to Gastein Valley, an enchanting spa region, renowned for its dramatic mountain scenery, thermal baths, and alpine spa towns. The coach will stop over in Bad Gastein, which is built across a hillside with a waterfall flowing through its centre. Take a stroll around, enjoying the old-world buildings, festive lights, and snow-dusted rooftops.

In the evening, a turkey dinner will be served, the perfect ending to an unforgettable day.

On Boxing Day, you can choose to unwind in the comfort of the hotel and enjoy an included lunch at the hotel, or join an optional excursion to another popular spa town, Bad Ischl. You’ll first be led on a walking tour, starting with Kaiservilla, the former summer residence of Emperor Franz Joseph I and Empress Elisabeth surrounded by sprawling, lush parkland. Beautifully decorated for Christmas, this mansion is draped in twinkling lights and old-world ornaments and looks out over the snowy landscapes.

You’ll get a chance to explore the elegant imperial rooms and the emperor’s study, as well as the scenic gardens with incredible alpine views, while gaining insight into Habsburg history and royal daily life.

Afterwards, a traditional horse-drawn carriage will take you through the historic town centre with its pretty streets, pastel buildings, and quaint cafés. Journey towards the riverside promenade, where you can see grand villas and take in more of the spectacular mountain scenery, a truly atmospheric experience.

Return later to the hotel for a final dinner with your fellow travellers.

KALM Aparthotel, Werfenweng Werfenweng  Set just a short walk from the village centre, this modern, exclusively serviced hotel is located in a beautiful historic district.  

The majority of our tours involve a certain amount of walking, including a short walk from the coach stop to the town, attraction or venue you're visiting. If you are bringing a wheelchair, please let us know at the time of booking so that appropriate arrangements can be made.

Occasionally, for operational reasons, we may have to change the order of the excursions on your holiday. The final day-by-day itinerary will be confirmed on your Final Travel Documents, which you will receive approximately three weeks prior to your departure.

We sometimes need to combine transfers to and from your hotel. We always try to keep any wait to a minimum, but you may be asked to wait at the airport for up to an hour, while other incoming flights arrive, before the transfer to your hotel. Similarly, we may need to transfer you back to the airport up to three hours before your flight home departs.

Rules may have changed since you last travelled to European Union countries as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. The following are useful guidelines which will help you prepare for your next adventure. You do require government issued passport to travel.

Names - It is very important that all passenger names are exactly as per your passport although we do not require middle names.

Passport - Your passport must meet two requirements to travel to an EU country and to Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. It must be: Less than 10 years old on the day you arrive (please check the "date of issue") and valid for at least 3 months after the day you return home (please check the "expiry date").

Visa - You do not need a visa for short trips to most EU countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. You’ll be able to stay for up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period.

The EES scheme commenced on the 12th October 2025, and the phased implementation will last until 9 April 2026. From 10 April 2026, EES will be fully operational at all EU borders. - the latest information can be found at https://travel-europe.europa.eu/ees/ltr

EES is a new digital border management system for registering non-EU nationals travelling for a short stay, each time they cross the external borders of most European countries. Once introduced, when you go through passport control on arrival, as well as producing your passport for checking, you will also have your photograph taken and fingerprints scanned. The system will register your entry on arrival and your exit when departing. You will only need to do this on your first entry into Europe after the scheme starts.

For those travelling via Eurostar, there is a dual British and French/Belgian border in operational at St Pancras International. Therefore the EES system will be in place at the station, you will not need to be checked again on arrival at the other side. Please note: Irish passport holders or British Passport holders with an EU residency are currently excluded.

Following the UK's withdrawal from the European Union, changes have been planned which affect the eligibility of citizens of the United Kingdom to have visa free travel to the EU. ETIAS travel authorisation is a new entry requirement for visa-exempt nationals travelling to any of the European Union and Schengen counties.

The ETIAS system is not live yet - the latest information can be found at www.etias.com. We recommend keeping yourself updated on the planned commencement date and, once live (and if applicable to you), apply for your ETIAS in good time prior to travel.

Newmarket Holidays will not be able to undertake ETIAS applications on your behalf, so have instead instructed the services of the Travel Visa Company to provide help, should you need it. You can find more information about this service here.
